The Standards in Action project began in Kansas in 2010. Kansas is participating in this project as part of its ongoing committment to effectively implement content standards in adult education. From 2007 through 2009 the state developed content standards for math, writing, reading, and listening. The project creates an opportunity for programs and instructors to understand the standards and how they support CASAS competencies, align instruction and resources to the standards and the competencies, and create a collegial enviornment for shared professional learning.
The SIA project is separated in to four innovations: Understanding the Standards We Teach, Translating Standards in to Curriculum, Focus on Assignments, and Observing Standards in Action. Three programs were selected for the initial implementation: Johnson County Community College Adult Education, Kansas City Kansas Community College On Track, and Salina Adult Education Center. These programs began work on innovation one in February of 2010. In Septermber of 2010, a second group of Kansas Adult Education programs will be selected to implement the same four units. They will have the benefit of drawing on the experiences of the intial group to smooth the learning curve. Click here to see an implementation calendar for the two-year project.
